VALE GAIL HARBERIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of Gail Harber, much loved wife of Peter ‘Pearl’ Harber.Gail’s connection to De La came through Pearl who, while he played football with CBC St Kilda Old Boys, attended De La between 1955-59. He later came to the Club and made a significant off-field contribution and her boys Marcus, Nick & Anthony who all played at De La.Peter was very much involved at the Club as Team Manager and Chairman of Selectors during the period from 1979-83, overseeing a very successful period of the Club. He has continued to be a great supporter and regular visitor to the Club. All three boys played Juniors, and both Marcus and Nick went on to play over 100 games and represent the Club in the Seniors. When time allowed, Gail would often be seen at De La urging on her boys.Gail was diagnosed with lung cancer only 15 months ago and bravely battled the disease, constantly assuring people that she was ’going well’, never complaining about her fate. Her loving and caring way will be greatly missed. Our sincere condolences to husband Peter, children Marcus, Nick, Anthony and Jane, and extended family and friends. 💙💛Vale Gail Harber1/2/1946 - 1/1/2022 ... See MoreSee Less

VALE PEG PURCELLIt is with great sadness that we share the passing Peg Purcell, the last surviving member of a wonderful group of De La women. When Ken Purcell joined De La in 1957, no one could have predicted the influence a group of committed women would have on the Club over the next 20 years. Peg would join forces with Nita Raynor, Elsie Compton, Peg Newton and Tess May in the late-50’s, forming a formidable off-field presence known as the ‘Ladies of the Tent’. These women worked in primitive conditions to provide Afternoon Tea for supporters and raise money for the Club. After the move to East Malvern, they were joined by many others on Thursday nights to provide a nutritious meal and a social setting for players, members and supporters. This group of women were also front and centre to the organisation and running of off-field social events. The football gene was well established in the Purcell blood, with first son John playing at De La Salle and youngest son Peter becoming a very accomplished player for the old enemy, Ormond.Peg was a very welcoming and caring influence over a long period and will be remembered very fondly by all who came into contact with her. The culture at a club like De La Salle owes an enormous amount to the work of those that come before them, and Ken & Peg can be suitably proud of their contribution to this wonderful club.Peg now joins Ken, and our thoughts are with her five children Margaret, John, Anne, Joan and Peter with partners Terry, Geoff & Peter (d.); and her 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. 💙💛Vale Peg Purcell28/9/1926 - 28/12/2021 ...
