AJ Mithen catches up with Senior Coach Paul Satterley

It’s a season defining week for De La Salle as they welcome perennial VAFA powerhouse Old Xaverians to Waverley Oval.
And the side will need an improved performance after battling past a resilient Beaumaris, according to Senior Coach Paul Satterley.

“There were a few nervous moments, particularly in the third quarter where we were a bit flat footed,” Satterley said. “There was a period there where we sort of just accepted what the opposition was doing.”

“We weren’t able to change it throughout that quarter but we had the opportunity to assess what had happened at the three quarter time break.”

The margin for error is narrowing by the week as the finals race comes to the pointy end and Satterley again put the heat on his leadership team to get his side out of the mire.

“As a coaching staff we demanded more for our leaders. To a man, they all set the standard in that last quarter against Beaumaris– you could see them lift across the ground. Our tackling and intensity lifted and that’s what you want to see from our team.”
Although the performance wasn’t as polished as supporters had hoped, the win keeps De La on track in season 2017.

“Last week was a must win game to stay in the race for the four and when you’re down two points heading into the last, there was a fair bit riding on it for us,” Satterley noted. “This was one positive step towards where we want to be this year.”

De La and Xavs have a long history of great battles in critical games and this week will be no different. The Dees will be looking to reverse a round one result where Xavs ran all over them in the last quarter for a convincing win.

“We were disappointed with how that game went in the end after we’d had a bit of control,” said Satterley.

“It’s our home ground, the biggest game of the year, two teams vying for one of the spots in the four, we’ve both got so much to play for this week and it’s a really good test for everyone”

It all happens at Waverley Oval from 2pm Saturday July 1 and if history is any guide, it will be a fantastic contest.
