Match Report
Carnival like atmosphere at St Bernards College today. With three De La teams all playing at the Snake Pit, the U19 Blues were able to stand along side both Senior teams and pay their respects to the ANZACS for a minutes silence.
We had five players making their season debut, which is a good sign of our depth and versatility. Conditions were excellent, however little was unknown regarding our opponents leading into the game.
Early signs looked good, with Stomper winning the Ruck and our mids racking up consecutive clearances. Our key forwards were exposing St Bernards lack of height and killing them overhead, and the conditions certainly suited us for this style of play. With a four goal lead at the first break, De La were in control, however we unfortunately lost Archie for the day with a shoulder injury.
Second quarter saw our backline winning some tight one on one battles, and rebounding well. Our forward line combined well which resulted in another four goals, from three different players. One aspect which did require attention were some rushed kicks into our forward 50.
At the main break, and with a handy six goal lead, we could not afford to take the foot off. To St Bernards credit they did not lie down and came out swinging in the third quarter. The opposition looked quicker and started winning some contested ball around the ground, which tested our backline. Eventually DeLa settled and got the game back in our terms towards the end of the third quarter.
Last quarter started with multiple clearances from St Bernards, but our backline in Heals, Horse and Eddie were superb and knocked the wind out of their sails. Another few goals from De La ensured that the team walked into the sheds and pumped out the club song.
