Old Haileybury vs De La Salle

Match Report

Qtr 1:Contrary to predications, conditions were perfect for footy, although the ground condition itself, could not match that of / at Old Trinity. The top 2 teams staged an intense start, with OH kicking to the end, which inexplicably, 19 of the match 24 goals were scored! OH were constantly driving long kicks into their forward area, only to be repelled time & again by the superb contested marking of Nathan Scollo. Some suggested that he had 10 marks for the quarter, although I thought 7 was the total in an amazing feat for Scollo. The coaching moves of Sean Fisher to forward & Scollo to defence is a master stroke !

With tackling & smothers a feature, OH seemed to have the ascendency & their goal at the 13 minute mark confirmed this. DLS had opportunities. Scollo pack mark & play on to Ryan O’Meara who marked but scored only a behind. Soon after, OH with quick ball movement scored their 2nd, at the 18 minute mark. A strong tackle by Tom Lyngberg, in the FP deserved much better than the resultant “out on the full”, leaving DLS trailing by 13 points at ¼ time
DLS 0.2=2 OH 2.3=15.

Qtr 2: DLS started strongly with Curtis Day intercepting & passing to Will Mackie to Lyngberg. His kick from the FP missed again! At the 4-minute mark, Indovino was freed & the strong disputation by OH, gave Indovino the goal, after the 50 meter penalty took him to the goal square. Top level footy was on display & with Pat Bohan showing ruck smarts, taking the ball from a ruck situation, 30 meters from goal to snap DLS’s 2nd at the 11 minute mark. Despite being constantly in attack DLS could not improve on the scoreboard as several rushed snaps missed!

At the 13-minute mark, Bohan was again involved, this time with a mark in the goal square amongst a pack of OH big men! Superb! OH tried to get into the game, but the tough tag by Will Mackie on top OH player Gasperini (playing his 100th) ensured ball movement was slowed. Meanwhile the DLS defence lead by Luke Healy, Tom Deane-Johns & Scollo, held firm. A long kick into DLS forward zone at the 20-minute mark, gave Hugh Nicholson, the chance to display his front & centre skills to score DLS’s 4th & extend the lead out to 13 points. In days gone by, this situation would have resulted in an OH mark ay CHB!

DLS are dominant. OH unravelling, arguing with umps & their bench! Lyngberg, freed in a marking contest, goaled at last at the 26 minute mark. Scollo from yet another fine defensive mark, sent the ball forward, where from a pack near the goal square, a free was paid to DLS & Hamish Curtis taking the advantage, scored from very close in at the 28 minute mark. DLS goaled at the 29-minute mark (O’Meara?), 36-Minute mark (Tom Stanton, mark & 50 M penalty). Yes, that is correct, 36-minute quarter, due to Sean Fisher having to be assisted from ground, midway through quarter, curtesy of an OH elbow to face requiring stiches to his lip.
DLS were totally dominant from midway through quarter, scoring 8.4 : OH 0.3 to have a lead 36 points at ½ time

Qtr 3: The half time warning by Snr coach Nick at ½ time, to expect a torrid reception from OH, came to fruition! OH, getting on top of centre clearances despite the strong contesting of Tom Docherty & Seb Filipovic, drove the forward consistently.  OH goaled at the 5,9,12,14,&16 minute marks. 2 of these were from amazing snaps from virtually impossible positions & under strong pressure. Scollo & Healy & Will McKinnon were prominent in defence, but the avalanche of forward thrusts, overwhelmed the DLS defence. The ½ time margin of 36 was now reduced to 6 points with at least ½ of the quarter to go!

Relief, to some extent, came at the 19 minute mark when Indovino marked strongly, played on, shrugging a strong tackle, to kick from about 50 meters out & see it bounce through the unguarded goal.
OH kicked their 6th straight for the quarter at the 22 minute mark & bring the margin back to 7 points. DLS appeared to have steadied & when Stanton marked at CHF, via a perfectly placed kick off half back by Jake Williams, his accurate conversion restored the margin to 13 points at ¾ time. It had been 6 goals to 2.1 quarter in favour of OH

Qtr4: DLS were now kicking to the end where 19 of the match 24 goals were scored despite there being no discernible wind advantage! Bohan, who was having an imposing presence on the match, passed to Seb Fillipovic to O’Meara, who goaled from the HFF. Margin 19 points after 2 minutes. Bohan was again involved, passing to Mackie, who passed to O’Meara to snap a goal from a pack situation. Lead 26. Bohan again marked in defence, but a free was awarded to OH for an off ball interference, of which players had been warned by the umpires. The resultant goal sparked another resurgence from OH with 24 minutes remaining! Lead 20 points.
At the 10 minute mark Stanton took a strongly contested mark , played on to pass to Liam Wood who goaled from long range to restore the lead to 26 points. OH were throwing everything into the contest as time was now becoming an issue for them! Every possession was made under severe pressure! An example being when at the 11-minute mark, a defensive DLS kick went “out on the full”. OH gaoled from that to again reduce the margin 20 points. During this period, DLS defence, headed by Scollo, who took several vital contested marks, & Bohan, stood firm!

12 minutes of back & forth intensely contested footy ensued, before Bohan’s long kick out of defence, was marked high overhead by Indovino, some 50 meters out on the HFF. With the “sealer” on his boot, he goaled, with what was the worst looking kick to accurately go through the goals. He said later that the ball came off his shin!
The final quarter was a fine exhibition of contested footy. Strange that the 1st & 4th quarters were almost evenly shared, while the middle 2 were blow outs & the difference in DLS favour being the match determinate!

DLS are now a clear 2nd on 40 points, 2 behind OH with the best % in “B” grade of 142%. There are 4 teams on 36, one being Old Ivanhoe, who we play at home next Saturday. While at the other end Williamstown (14) are making a strong bid to avoid relegation, challenging Caulfield Grammar (16)
