Match Report

Basically, the boys played superior running footy, which overwhelmed AJAX in all but the 1st quarter. After AJAX scored 1st  at the 7 minute mark, DLS answered quickly with Jack Gava goaling from a scramble in the goal square. After a period of contested footy, Jake marked strongly & goaled from a good kick by Liam Eldering. Josh Cumberlidge, freed in the forward pocket, received a 50 meter penalty which made a difficult shot easy.

1st qtr ended with DLS 3.4=22 : AJAX 1.3=9

The 2nd quarter opened with the same situation as at the end of Q1 but with AJAX goaling this time!

Remarkably, DLS despite a severe height disadvantage in the ruck department , were getting an equal share of the clearances. Jack Gava in particular, aided by the strong midfielders Jake, Cam Roberts & Lachie Gawel, consistently had the ball in the DLS forward zone.

Goals came at regular intervals during this term. Firstly to Gava his 2nd & then to 1st gamer Luke Lloyd, Indi (3), Tom Lynberg & Liam Murphy, right on the ½ time siren.

In what was a good display of running footy, the drive from the back 6 with Tom Doherty, in particular, prominent, exposed the AJAX team. Cam Roberts‘ strength, particularly around the centre bounces & ball ups was telling.

Scores at ½ time were DLS 10.7=69 AJAX 2.4=16

The 3rd quarter, in sharp contrast to that of the 2nd, was a tame affair from the scoring standpoint. AJAX, despite a noticeable increase in intensity, which was still previously high, managed to score only 1 behind. Our defence has developed into a cohesive unit. In this, term Ryan O’Meara, the returning vetran, Sam Williams & the strong goal line marking of Will McKinnon, were prominent! Our solitary goal came at the 11 minute mark when Liam Eldering took a strong contested mark at about CHF & converted.

The final quarter started with DLS holding a comfortable 66 point advantage. AJAX fought strongly, despite that margin, and were rewarded with a goal, their 1st since the 2 minute mark of Q2. DLS struggled to regain their former dominance around the clearances. But for DLS superb defence & poor ball handling by AJAX, they would have added a few more to their score.

After about 12 minutes of this scenario, Trent Shannon’s superb tackle led to a free & converted goal. This was followed some minutes later when Indi roved the pack brilliantly, to goal (his 4th) from close range.

Much later, after DLS squandering several promising opportunities, young goal sneak Christian Algeri dribbled one through from about 10 meters & followed up 7 minutes later with a brilliant snapped goal.

A superb team effort with all contributing!

Best: Tom Docherty, Cam Roberts, Tom Lynberg, Jack Gava, Adrian Indovino, Campbell Bedford.
Goals: Indovino 4, Christian Algeri 2, Gava 2, Liam Murphy, Jake Williams, Josh Cumblidge, Trent Shannon, Liam Eldering, Luke Lloyd, Lynberg
