St Kevins vs De La Salle
|De La Salle||9||2||56|
Training this season has been full of enthusiasm with excellent participation, and this week was no exception. Competition to hold spots in the Blues has been tight, and the squad have been working hard to improve. So with a full list and one new debutant in Sam Cross, the Blues headed down the road to TH King to take on ladder leaders St Kevins.
Clearances out of the middle were difficult for both teams due to boggy centre, but DeLa started well with some hard contested footy, none better than George’s attack on the footy running back with the flight. Sheeds and Pietschy were rebounding and using the ball well, and Russell was proving a handfull up forward. Only 2 points separated the teams at the first break.
St Kevins started strong in the 2nd quarter, but good signs from DeLa with plenty of energy and good attitudes from all lines. We were able to match them at stoppages, however the home team had more forward entries, and as a result kicked 4 goals to our 2.
Winning stoppages was in our favour during the third quarter, however our ball movement and skills dropped off which resulted in costly turn overs. St Kevins made the most of their opportunities and had a lot of forward entries. Our backline was terrific in handling the pressure, as they have done previously. Cross looked very much at home in the backline, and Healy was terrific with his contested marking. McMahon also provided plenty of dash, but the home side were slowly but surely improving their lead.
The tempo continued in the forth, and St Kevins kicked away. DeLa to their credit maintained effort and committment until the final siren. General feeling after the game was that DeLa had a crack, and that St Kevins were too good on the day – let’s see if we can give them another shake when we next play them
