A double header today for the U19’s on our home deck. The Blues took on Old Brighton who were sitting in a similar position on the ladder, but had posted some inconsistent results in their last few outings. A good opportunity for our guys to find some form and improve on controlling the game.
A hectic start to the game with both teams showing intent. DeLa’s attitude and work rate around stoppages was excellent, and as a result we were able to play most of the first quarter in our front half. 17 to 4 inside 50’s was an impressive stat, but to the oppositions credit, their backline looked strong, and they limited our conversion rate. Two goals up at quarter time, we’ll take that.
Old Brighton lifted a notch, and we didn’t adapt during the second quarter. Our intensity appeared to drop which resulted in a few goals for the opposition. The challenge now was to control the tempo of the game and get things back on our terms.
Third quarter had us kicking to the Southern end, which no surprise was trending as the scoring end. DeLa lifted around the middle and smashed the visitors with forward entries. Again Old Brighton were looking very stubborn with their backline, and not allowing our key forwards to take a clean mark. Not too many set shots on goal, instead a lot of hectic ball in our forward line, which did result in 3 important goals, but plenty of missed shots.
Our backs again looked solid today. Healy dominated with his intercept marking and disposal efficiency. The last quarter saw the visitors match us at clearances and inside 50’s, but to DeLa’s credit, they made the most of todays opportunity and grind out a much needed win.
