University Blues vs De La Salle

Out played today by Uni Blues in both body and mind.

After what appeared to be high standards displayed by all players at training during the week, the Blues did not replicate this today at Melbourne Uni. The game today was against Uni Blues on their main ground in relatively good conditions. Knowing that the host side was likely to be very strong, we did not adapt well and let them take charge. Generally our skills and composure were poor in the first quarter. Uni Blues on the other hand looked strong around contests and runners prepared to work hard. DeLa conceded three goals by the first break, not a huge margin, but attitudes and efforts were not looking good. Only shining light was Crossy in defence who was determined in not letting his opponent get a touch.

Second quarter was a noticeable improvement from our midfield. Although stoppages went our way, we were still getting beaten at contests forward of centre. With a similar forward entry count to the home side, we unfortunately still did not manage to trouble the scorers, whereas, Uni Blues added another three goals to their tally.

Half time break was a chance to analyse and assess. It was relatively obvious that our forwards were struggling to covert, so we made a couple of positional changes across the ground. Mids were still lifting their game, which gave scoring opportunities to Wain and Rossister who kicked truly. Our backline were tested a lot today, but did not disappoint – McMahon and Mounas looked to beat their opponents on numerous occasions.

Final quarter was not good for DeLa. Our attitude and effort looked off, and the home side sensed this. They piled on another six goals, which was our worst quarter for the season. The challenge for the Blues is now to re-group, and duplicate the style of football that we know that they are capable of.
