Match Report

Qtr 1: With the ground in good condition & light rain falling, this 2 Vs 3 clash started. OT were quickly into attack, putting the newly configured DLS defence to the test, early. Liam Wood & Will Mackie came under notice for their strong tackles & Will straight into his tagging role effectively. DLS gradually got on top & at the 18th minute Curtis day passed to the leading Sean Fisher, who converted from about 50 out.

A further 8 minutes of play, in which DLS held the ascendency without scoreboard reward, elapsed before OT, from a strongly contested mark, goaled to lead at the 1st change by 1 point.

Qtr 2: DLS were quickly into attack. From a scrimmage at the goal front, Trent Shannon somehow got his foot to the ball to record DLS 2nd goal at the 3-minute mark. An horrendous kick in from an OT behind, & a subsequent free by Jake Williams, who was under extreme pressure as a consequence of this kick in, gave OT their 2nd goal at the 6 minute mark. Soon after Adrian Indovino goaled, with a superbly executed check side kick, after an OT “out on full” error. At the 10-minute mark, with the ball constantly in the DLS forward zone, Fisher laid a strong tackle. From the resultant free, he kicked to Ryan O,Meara, who was freed in the marking contest, but Hugh Nicholson swooped & was allowed “advantage” to goal & extend the DLS lead to 9 points.

Some 20 minutes later, during which DLS peppered the goals with only behinds resulting, OT, with another strongly contested mark goaled, to significantly blunt the impact of DLS’s dominance in the quarter!

Qtr 3: DLS again started strongly, with Algeri in everything. At the 6 minute mark, after some fine team work involving amongst others, Fraser Cameron & O’Meara, landed the ball with Algeri, who marked at CHF & converted to increase the lead to 15 points. The game was being played constantly forward of centre in DLS’s area. 11 minutes in & Algeri snapped from a pack situation which extended the lead to 21 points. Algeri was again involved when a minute later he passed to Lachie Gawel who goaled from CHF. The situation had become dire for OT. Although they contested, the strong bodies of Cameron, Gawel & Mackie, allowed the DLS smaller players clear access to continue the fast running, open game style!

At the 14 minute mark, a kick off the ground in the goal square gave OT some respite. 2 minutes later another fine passage of play involving Curtis Day, Seb Filipovic, put the ball to the goal square where O’Meara marked strongly to restore the DLS margin to 27 points. A free against Fisher, and a subsequent 50-meter penalty against Will McKinnon, gifted OT a goal at the 18 minute mark.
Trent Shannon was felled in a marking contest, when it appeared that an OT player deliberately jumped into his back, which caused Trent to remain on the ground for several minutes. Trent had to be helped from the ground. He took no further part in the game! It was illogical that the umpires took no action over this incident!

At the 20-minute stage Fisher showing strength, marked & converted to restore the margin to 28 points. Another ruck free to OT in the FP reduced the margin at ¾ time to an imposing 20 points. It had been a relatively high scoring quarter: DLS 5.1 to OT 3.2.

Qtr4: With DLS ascendant, goals flowed at the 1-minute mark (Fisher) 4 Minute mark (Nicholson?), 14 minute mark (Fisher), 21 minute (Algeri?), 31 (Seb Filipovic). While OT, whose players were increasingly vigorous in their tackles, goaled at the 12 minute & 22 minute marks to add respectability & save %, which is going to be a significant factor in determining ladder positions at end of the home & away series.
DLS had a team of solid contributors & can look forward to next week’s, top of the table clash with Old Haileybury, who drew with Williamstown CYMS yesterday, next Saturday.
