Match Report

Qtr 1: Perfect weather conditions & the ground in good shape, greeted the teams 2nd & equal 3rd on the ladder. Good skills on display, as ball travelled the length of the ground in a fast opening.  A centering kick from a good sliding mark on the boundary by Hamish Curtis (I think), landed the ball with a pack at CHF from which Fraser Cameron emerged to snap DLS’s 1st  A further 3 minutes later, Christian Algeri’s long kick from another pack scrum was marked by Pat Bohan in the FP from which he kicked DLS’s 2nd at the 4 minute- mark.

OI looked dangerous in their forward zone & scored their 1st goal at the 6- minute mark from an outstanding pack mark. OI were doing best at the clearances, but squandered opportunities as did DLS, both teams adding 6 behinds in this 10- minute period. With play concentrated in the DLS forward zone, a swift kick out of defense by OI, following an intercepted handpass, saw an OI player all alone in their forward zone. The consequent goal at the 16 minute-mark gave OI the lead by 1 point.

DLS defense was now under pressure, but the reliable Nathan Scollo’s marking held firm. Play swung between deep defences for another 9 minutes before Seb Filipovic, freed for a high tackle, goaled at the 25 minute- mark. OI answered immediately, to restore their 1-point lead. Play was of a high standard, as expected from teams in their ladder positions! Tom Docherty, doing well at the centre clearances, passed to Liam Wood whose kick found Tom Lyngberg on the lead for his 1st & DLS’s third at the 28 minute- mark. Following a superb defensive mark by Will McKinnon, Campbell Bedford broke free from the HFF & kicked a long goal on the run to secure the DLS lead of 11 points at quarter time.

DLS 5.3=33 OI 3.4=22

Qtr 2: For those unfamiliar with the DLS ground, the goals to the left of the pavilion are at the Chadstone end. While those to the right of the pavilion are nominally the City end. DLS were now kicking to the City end.

DLS were dominant early without scoreboard impact, with Cameron’s snap going “Out on the Full”. An intercepted handball gave OI their 4th goal, at the 3 minute-mark. The next 15 minutes of play was totally dominated by DLS. It was typified by strings of handpasses & long passages on running footy of the “give & go” variety. Players from the 1984 “A” grade premiership luncheon were amazed at the skill level & speed on display.

Goals came at the 4 Minute mark (Bohan), 12 (Wood), 14 (Indovino), 18 (S Filipovic. OI simply could not get their hands on the footy. When they rarely ventured forward, Tom Deane-Johns & company had no difficulty in repelling them, until at the 20 minute mark, OI goaled & reduce the DLS margin to 23 points. A strong tackle by Lyngberg in the FP, supplied his 2nd & DLS’s 10th goal at the 22 minute mark. A series of quick-fire handballs landed the ball close to the behind line where Cameron marked & snapped DLS’s 11th at the 24 minute mark.

Cameron was again involved when his snap from CHF gave DLS its 12th & 7th for the quarter, goals. At the 29-minute mark, Hamish Curtis, on the receiving end of a clever hand pass, scored DLS’s 13 goal & 8th for the quarter. OI, after a DLS 50-meter penalty, scored their 3rd for the quarter & 6th for the game at the 32 minute-mark, leaving DLS a half time lead of 41 points.

DLS 13.6=84 OI 6.7=43

Qtr 3: OI came out full of fight as expected from a finals contender and were rewarded when they goaled at the 2 minute mark. 5 minutes of fine footy ensued before Deane-Johns marked superbly at CHB, dashed through the centre to pass perfectly to Ryan O’Meara on the lead! Granted a 50 meter penalty, Ryan scored DLS’s 14th goal at the 7 minute-mark. Cameron was in everything, but his great contested mark, was rewarded with only a behind.

Docherty, playing well, passed superbly to Wood some 30 meters out in front, to score DLS’s 15th goal. OI defended grimily, as the ball was constantly in their defensive zone! In the next 14 minutes of play DLS squandered many gettable goaling opportunities to record 9 behinds for the quarter. (3 rushed, including a goal kicked by an OI defender trying to affect a switch)

At the 25-minute mark, O’Meara marked the OI kick in & kicked DLS’s 16th  & 3rd for the quarter to establish a 61 point lead at ¾ time.

DLS 16.15=111 OI 7.8=50

Qtr4: The final quarter was a repeat of the 3rd with DLS in control but OI still trying their best!  Cameron was playing the swingman role superbly. Marking strongly at both ends. Freed for a high tackle some 25 meters from goal, he recorded his 4th (?) & DLS’s 17th at the 3-minute mark. 3 minutes later, on the end of about 4 lightning handballs, Cameron kicked his 5th from a deep angle.

2 minutes later, Tom Lyngberg, much to the delight of his teammates snapped his 3rd & DLS’s 19th from a scrum in the goal square! Less than 2 minutes later, Indovino, benefitting from another clever hand pass, goaled from the goal square. OI, intercepting a handpass, went straight down the middle to gaol at the 18 minute-mark.

Indovino, showing some of his “old” allusivity, eluded several opponents to gather & snap his 3rd & DLS’s 21st goal at the 24 minute mark. 3 minutes later, he marked strongly on the lead, after good footy involving Hugh Nicholson & Docherty, His 4th goal & DLS’s 22nd rounded out a fine display by the whole team in Will Mackie’s 150th game!

Summary: A fine display of running football. From ½ time DLS kicked 9 goals to OI’s 2. Next week DLS plays Old Camberwell, away, OC are currently 5th on 38 behind Old Trinity 38 (drew this w/e) & Old Geelong 3rd on 40.
