Match Report
Blues dig in to claim their 3rd win on the trot against top 4 side Caulfield Grammarians.
A bit of movement during the week saw Healy and Seb Filipovic elevated to the Seniors, and a couple of outs due to injury and illness, which presented good opportunities for Childs, Baker and Kaminaris to step up and continue their hot form from the Golds.
Damp conditions welcomed the Blues today when they arrived at our home ground for today’s curtain raiser. Not much was known about our opponents in Caulfield, except that they had posted some strong wins recently, so DeLa knew that todays game was going to be physical and test of stamina.
The first quarter started as predicted, with both teams competing hard to win the ball. The tone was set early with great tackles and involvement from our on-ballers JT and Lucas. The bigger bodies from Caulfield were a handfull, as they set up well behind the ball and killed us with their number of forward entries. Once again our backline remained tight and restricted their scoring shots to only four from fifteen forward entries.
Our mid-fielders were supreme in the second quarter, and DeLa totally dominated clearances around stoppages. Macbeth really showed his class with his disposals and combined well with our forwards. A three goal quarter now had DeLa leading at the main break by 10 points.
Our main ruckman Tommy Martin left the field with an injury, which had us searching for a quick backup. Queue first gamer Tommy Childs who excelled with the challenge against a much taller opponent. Tommy was instrumental in winning taps and winning clearances. Momentum had swung our way, especially when our other first gamer Dean Kami slotted two consecutive goals from the same pocket.
Last quarter we were intent on playing attacking style footy, however Caulfield responded well and forced DeLa to retreat and play most of the quarter in our back half. Not an ideal situation, but the players hung on and gave their all to hold on and achieve a very important win.
