Under 19 Colts Match Report: Round 2 2022

Apr 12, 2022

It was hard to know what to expect coming into Round 2 of the Colts season. The boys had just come out of a heartbreaking loss to Old Xavs and were ready to face off against Pegs, who had won their Round 1 encounter. In addition to the above, the side would be without their three most experienced players, who were lost either to injury or playing in the Golds side. These question marks were soon to be answered, when captain Jude Dannaoui made the correct call for his first decision as captain, winning the toss and kicking with the breeze.

The boys came out firing, which was a feature of Round 1 as well, piling on 9 unanswered goals to 0 in the first quarter. Two of the highlights being, a goal to returning player who faced all last year with injury, Harry Mahon, as well as debuting player, Ryan Eldering taking a beautiful mark and finishing truly for his first goal of the club.

Knowing Pegs were going to come out firing in the second quarter, De La showed great maturity, slowing the game down, hitting their targets and intelligently playing the defensive side of the ground. Both teams managed to score one goal.

With their confidence up and the wind blowing on their back, De La once again took full control of the game in the third quarter. With Martin and Hele dominating in the ruck and midfielders such as Kerr, Sinclair, Liakakos and many more putting in the hard work, Pegs remained scoreless in the third quarter. De La would have been able to do more damage if it weren’t for wayward kicking, 5.7 being the total for that quarter. Once the game was beyond doubt in the second half, De La were able to experiment a bit with positioning which will hopefully leave them in good stead for the future if they need to change things up against an opposition who are on top.

Pegs were able to get a couple of late junk time goals in the last quarter but the boys ran out the last quarter well, with no players on the bench. The song was sung nice and loud, most players for the first time! One of the most impressive parts of the side was the equal contribution across the board, ending the game with 10 different goal kickers!

Round 3 sees the Colts come up against Therry Penola, who have two big wins to their name so far. Hopefully the boys can rise to the occasion!

Result: De la Salle 15.3.103 vs Pegs 5.4.29

Votes: Angus Kerr – 4, Ethan Hele – 3, Tom Martin – 2, Andrew Kim, Bryce Loughnan, Jonah Zitzek, Darcy Sinclair, Anthony Liakakos, Angus Sheedy – 1
