Match Report
Game started in good footy conditions with ground good apart from the cricket wicket area bog! Josh Cumberlidge, hard at it as usual, goaled with an out of pack snap with game in progress for under a minute. Sean Fisher’s fine running goal from distance, at the 3 minute mark, added scoreboard pressure in a tense struggle. After 7 minutes of hard, contested, scrum footy, OGGS got their first DLS, playing with running flair added goals to Seb Filipovic (good pass from Cumberlidge), Charlie Aitken,(intercept mark) & Campbell Bedford at the 12, 15, & 16 minutes marks respectively.
DLS ended the quarter with a well deserved 28 point margin, which should have been even better, had we passed ball to players, who were in better scoring positions instead of blasting away at goal.
Although Sean Fisher was competing valiantly in the ruck, the sheer size of OGGS’ No 1 could not be overcome! OGGS attacked constantly, adding goals at the 1,5,9, & 12 minute marks. The 1st of these was controversial, when one field umpire appeared to overrule the other in awarded a free in front of goal, for a deliberate rushed behind!DLS steadied with goals to Seb Filipovic, following a fine pass from Cumberlidge & Indovino, following a well deserved free for a head high tackle, at the 16 & 29 minute marks respectively!
DLS took a 10 point lead into the 3rd Qtr which was added to when Tom Lyngberg dribbled through a goal from a pack situation in the forward pocket at the 4 minute mark. Another period of scrappy, hard fought, pack footy ensued until OGGS goaled at the 13 & 17 minute marks to reduce our lead to 2 points midway through the term.
Liam Wood took a fine pack contested mark in the forward pocket & converted at the 19 minute mark. One of the day’s highlights was a long run by Matt Hill around the road side boundary, followed by an excellently placed kick for Indovino to run onto & goal at the 24 minute mark!
Another highlight, in an otherwise scrappy game, occurred when Jake gathered the ensuing centre ruck tape & handballed to the fast running Christian Algeri, who goaled from the edge of the centre square!
DLS entered the final quarter with an 18 point margin, which looked sufficient given the conditions & the scoring pattern so far.
OGGS hopes rose after they goaled at the 7 minute mark, rewarding a period of dominance. OGGS had lifted their intensity noticeably and but for some stout defence by Ryan O’Meara & 1st gamer Luke Healy, they would have been rewarded! A strong pack mark by Tom Lyngberg & accurate conversion eased the palpable tension at the 10 minute mark, temporarily. OGGS goaled some 11 minutes later but DLS looked safe with the defence standing up well to the OGGS pressure. Tom Lyngberg marked strongly again close to goal to give DLS a well deserves victory over a gallant, tough opponent by 18 points.
Special mention to Charlie Aitken who played 6 quarters, having been called up from the Ressies due to the late withdrawal of Pat Bohe
