Like Round 1, a couple of late outs really hurt the chances for the Colts side, but that didn’t stop the boys from giving their all out on the field. Starting the game with no bench was always going to be difficult against undefeated Therry Penola, who had won both of their first matches by 10 goals.
As expected Therry Penola came out strong and really took control of the first half, taking advantage of periods of the game when Colts players had to come off and be checked for injury and illness, leaving them with a numerical advantage on the field. For all the dominance they showed though, De La fought hard and restricted it to a four goal deficit at half time. A real credit to the midfield and defence who held up under pressure.
After firing the boys up at half time, they came out with fire in their belly and with a point to prove. Slowly but surely trying to grind away at the lead that Therry Penola had acquired. Going into the last quarter, the difference had been dropped to around two goals.
Impressively, it was not the Therry Penola side with six on the bench that ran the game out the hardest, it was the De La Colts side who through pure grit, determination and heart took control of the last quarter. Even with half a dozen players cramping and unable to come off for the last few minutes, the boys still pushed right to the final siren.
Unfortunately, it was wayward kicking that cost the side a victory. Some gettable shots in the last quarter weren’t capitalised on and the side was defeated even with having five more scoring shots. Therry Penola being victorious 7.6. 48 to De La’s 5.13. 43. It is fair to say some goal kicking was on the cards for training this week.
Carver, O’Meara and Sheedy all played their best game for the club, while Tom Martin played a great solo ruck job for almost the entire game. A big thanks to Nathan Martinz, Mikel Laoumtzis and James Harper who doubled up to help make up for same late outs and injuries. Harper who normally plays full back got a taste of the forward line and managed to snag two goals!
Next match is against undefeated Bulleen Templestowe. With some big inclusions this week it should be a game not to be missed!
Result: De La 5.13. 43 v Therry Penola 7.6. 48
