Match Report

Despite DLS having more of the play, Williamstown scored first at the 3 minute mark. Sean Fisher was doing well in his new ruck role, giving plenty of support to our on ballers, at the centre bounce. Luke Lloyd, created great excitement when he broke several tackles to goal from the goal square at the 4 minute mark. Similarly, Indi goaled from a scrum in the goal square at the 9 minute mark. It was not pretty footy! Josh Cumberlidge, who marked at chf, from a superbly placed Ryan O’Meara kick, goaled at the 15 minute mark. This atoned somewhat  for a missed opportunity from the same spot moments earlier.

DLS was dominating play with Fisher, Jake & Sam W, Tom Docherty & Bedford prominent along with the whole team actually. Goals flowed at the 19,27,28 minute marks respectively, to Liam Wood, great kick in from Bedford, Docherty, using the outside of the boot method, Wood again, after a fine smoother by Fisher!

DLS had an imposing 36 point lead at the break & seemed headed to a percentage boosting win!

In a totally unforeseen turn of play, Williamstown dominated centre clearances, kicking 6 goals to 2 in Qtr 2. W’town had a dominant full forward in Archie Manton (#50), who ended up with 6 goals for the match. DLS goals, early & very late to Jake, who was on the end of a good chain of handpasses, at the 7 minute mark & Indi after the ½ time siren, when he scored from deep in the FP with an around the corner kick. But the Qtr belonged to W’town, which kicked 5 unanswered goals, from the 12th to the 27th minute mark. Leaving DLS with a 13 point margin at ½ time.

DLS opened the 3rd qtr strongly but were unable penetrate, until Tom Lyngberg marked under the scoreboard and converted at the 5 minute mark. Cumberlidge, marked a superbly placed kick from Sam Williams and strolled in to goal 3 minutes later! Luke Lloyd, aided by a free upfield & 2, 50 meter penalties, scored at the 17 minute mark as W’town unravelled! W’town scored their only goal at the 22 minute mark against the flow of play, but DLS responded 3 minutes later when Luke Lloyd marked a well placed kick from Bedford at CHF. This gave DLS a comfortable 30 point break at ¾ time! This was further enhanced when Luke Lloyd kicked his 4th & Indi freed & aided again by 50 meter penalties each goaled at the 2 & 5 minute marks respectively.

From this point the complex of the match changed totally. W’town, kicking to the end at which, inexplicably, 21 of the 27 goals were scored, dominated play. Our players could not get possession! W’town were powering home and a DLS loss loomed alarmingly. Williamstown kicked 5 unanswered goals from the 12th to the 28th minute mark mirroring their 2nd Qtr performance! When the siren sounded just before the 30 minute mark, DLS had scored a crucial victory over a gallant but at times ill disciplined Williamstown.

The return match at their ground should be interesting!! I won’t comment on the umpiring except to say: consistency please!

Best: Josh Cumberlidge, Tom Lyngberg, Sean Fisher, Jake Williams, Campbell Bedford, Sam Williams
Goals: Luke Lloyd 4, Liam Wood 2, Cumberlidge 2, Adrian Indovino 2, J Williams, Lyngberg
